A quick rant on Valentines Day
First off as a married man of eight years what I am about to say is nothing that my wife hasn’t heard already. So to all of you tired, man-hating, Oprah Winfrey slurping, “The View” watching housefraus and working women who may read this and think I’m writing it from a secret bunker in my basement out of fear of being chastised by my wife you can just shove it… But not until after you read this first, because YOU are my target audience on this one. Valentines Day is here and no doubt millions of down trodden men have already sent their wife or significant other flowers or candy or one of those horribly tacky teddy bears dressed up like people or maybe some kind of cheep jewelry and a dinner reservation to some snooty place with an overpriced menu that will make the final check resemble the national debt of a small third world country. Like all the other “holidays” in this country commercialism has total overshadowed the supposed “spirit” behind its origin. For the last two weeks every other commercial on TV has promoted the necessity to “buy her something special, this Valentine’s Day”. And let’s focus on that for a second shall we. I thought V-Day was about couples expressing their love and affection for each other, but you wouldn’t know that by the ads that are running on TV and in magazines would you? They are completely and totally one sided now. These ads in effect say “If you love her, you’ll buy her something, after all, you’re just lucky to be with her anyway you loser” or the inverse of that, “If you don’t buy her something, you’re an idiot and deserved to be punished!” Listen, I love my wife and when she’s not being a butt head she’s an awesome girl to be around, and I’m sure she feels the same about me (especially the butt head part) but the idea that as a man the only way I can truly express how I feel about her is to go and buy something not only insults my intelligence but is in fact sexist…at the least. As far as I’m concerned the only way this holiday could ever be taken seriously is if the men get equal time and recognition via TV commercials and magazine ads. What I mean by that is If you really want to show the “spirit” of this invented holiday then every once and a while let me see a commercial on TV that says “Ladies, this valentines day show him you love him with the gift of…SILENCE” or maybe “Nothing says ‘I love you’ to that special man in your life like…NOT TOUCHING HIS TV REMOTE” But wait, we are talking commercialism here and neither of those things cost any money (and yet most women somehow have difficulty doing them but whatever) so maybe something like this instead… “Ladies, show your man you love him this Valentine’s Day and hire a professional contractor to build that deck on the back porch you’ve always wanted instead of incessantly whining and nagging him to build it for you” Now if I saw THAT commercial on TV then you’d hear no complaints from me. The bottom line is this; Valentine’s Day is a sham, and if you’re a woman that’s hanging the well being of your relationship on the quality of “offering” you receive from your spouse or significant other (like the TV commercials and magazine ads say you should) then you don’t deserve to be in the relationship in the first place…Yeah, I said it.
